My official "Check the Neighborhood" homework assignment
You can change the layout, repaint the walls, and totally gut the kitchen... but you can’t change where the house is located. 📍
When you buy a home, you’re buying the lifestyle, the commute, the noise levels, and the community that comes with it. Your neighborhood isn't just where you live—it also plays a massive role in your home’s future resale value.
Before you fall head over heels for a property and sign on the dotted line, I always tell my clients to put on their detective hats and test-drive the neighborhood. 🕵️♂️✨
Here is your official "Check the Neighborhood" homework:
🚗 Drive the streets at different times: A street that feels like a quiet sanctuary on a Tuesday at 10 AM might turn into a bumper-to-bumper cut-through during Friday rush hour.👟 Walk the area: Get out of the car! Walk the sidewalks. Is it easy to get around? Do people wave? You'll feel the vibe of a place so much better on foot.
🏫 Check out the school districts: Even if you don't have kids, future buyers might. Strong school districts are one of the best ways to protect your home's value.
👋 Chat with the neighbors: If you see someone watering their lawn or walking their dog, say hi! Ask them what they love about living there—and if there's anything they'd change. They will give you the real, unvarnished truth.
☕ Visit the local spots: Spend an afternoon at the neighborhood coffee shop or grab a drink at the local restaurant. Can you picture yourself making this your regular weekend spot?
The Bottom Line: Your house is only half the equation. Make sure you love the block just as much as you love the building.
